Hello?! Hello?! Anybodyhome? Think McFly!

The Hoverboard! Oh goodness! If there was ever a better hypercolor invention to come out of the 80's, I sure as hell missed it. As a kid,we waited and wondered when the hoverboard was going to come out. Marty McFly killed it in his future Nikes, but once he got the DeLorean, well there was no more use for that. But the hoverboard is a prime example of technology versus practicality. It was supposed to replace the skateboard eventually, but future would tell us that in fact the skate board was just much more practical. Instead of vamping up skateboards and making them"bigger and better", they even made it smaller. With a skateboard you could ride and and do all sorts of "rad" flips and plants. Techonology couldn't overcome simplicity. We're always looking for bigger and better, (and I'm still waiting to see if the hoverboard comes out) but the fact is, how are you gonna do a kickflip on the hoverboard? Won't the pressure kock it to the ground? What are the safety hazards? There's already enough concern about safety with 4 wheel...what happens when you take away those? In the end, the hoverboard just wasn't simple enough. And our technicolor flying dreams went down the toilet faster then you can hit 88 mph in your Delorean. God, I wish this would have become a reality.

  1. Wow I thought I was the only one still waiting on the Hoverboard...lol. It's kind of crazy isn't it..you watch a movie made in the 80's that shows the future and the possibilities and here we are in the year 2009 and no hoverboard, or self drying jackets or even the cool automatic shoes...come on science catch up!

  2. If I wasn't petrified of heights, hover boards would be totally awesome! No, wait. Scared or not, hoever boards are still awesome. Yes, the safety concerns would outweigh the awesomeness for some people. But what new mode of transportation have we come up with? Everything is just improving on cars, with one expectation…the segway. Segways are nowhere near as cool as a hover board. When I see mall security guards cruising along on those stupid Segways, I have to fight the overwhelming urge to knock them off of it.

  3. A hover board would be fun but none of us will ever be around to see it neither will our kids and their kids and even their kids grandkids.. and even then it may never happen. The hover board is a great idea for a movie but in real life it would never happen. It would be a great way to save on engery for cars and other methods of transportation such as trains which we can see an early application of this use of megnates in the Mag-lev train in Europe.

  4. Hover boards kick a$$, so did this movie. As Ben said I to am waiting for the hover board! I do think hover boards will make it one day, and I hope to be around for it. Maybe by the time they come out with the hover boards they will figure out a way to have them hover over water.

  5. i was born in 1989 but i loved back to the future in the 90's. I thought the hoverboard was a cool thing but i couldn't even keep my balance on a skateboard so i wasn't waiting on one. It would be interesting if they came out with one after all this time.

  6. Loved this movie, but i don't think that the hoover board will ever big as big as the skateboard on pure functionality. I'm still waiting for technology to catch up to imagination too, but there will be a day.

  8. Well...I've never been one to go skateboarding. But if we had hoverboards, I would be on that thing every single day! I just watched back to the future the other day, and I actually wondering to myself "man, when are we going to get hoverboards?"

  9. I remember seeing this movie when i was young and thinking to myself "Yes this needs to happen," but obviously i could never really happen. Stranger things have happened though.

  10. Its only a matter of time. Though Back to the future might not be considered Sci-Fi it does have many aspects that define Sci-fi. If you look at old school Star Trek you will see that alot of the things that were considered sci fi back then are actually real here and now. So i say it is only a matter of time for the hoverboard.

  11. To be blunt, some things in science-fiction will never work. Either they are not practical, or they are just completely impossible. A classic example is the lightsaber. Face it, ever since you watched Star Wars, you wanted a lightsaber. But it doesn’t work. There are numerous problems with that mindset. The first, and most obvious is that light in the real world travels forever; how do you stop it at three feet. Second, how would it cut through anything and connect with another lightsaber like a swordfight. It just doesn’t work. Likewise, perpetual motion without constant added energy doesn’t work because of friction. Then again, people used to believe that the Earth was the center of the universe, so what do we know? Practicality, on the other hand, is more subjective.

  12. This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I always wanted one of those boards if they were actually possible to purchase. Also, the DeLorean was so cool on how it could travel back into time on the gas of waste.

  13. I've always watched Back to the Future but never got a chance to see the second one until a year ago and I watch it once after starting this class and boy was it amusing! I love how they fast forward to 2015 which is just around the corner and none of those cool inventioins are out yet! I would love a flying car!!

  14. Jumping jigga watts! The hover board never really made it I guess. With magnetic technology it might exist in today’s society, but the cost would probably be astronomical. What about the little pizza that turned into a large pizza?
