Dangers of Sports Technology

I couldn't help but wonder if the companies that create items like these bats or hockey sticks ever give thought to the players who have to stop the balls that are hit or the pucks that are shot. Hockey is different because equipment is worn by all players but baseball players are still taking the field with only a glove and a jockstrap for protection. As a former pitcher I know how fast the ball can get to you and I played in an era before the aluminum bats were allowed in baseball.

  1. When it comes to baseball, i highly doubt any company is concerned about the safety of any player, the main concern is to sell their product. Bats that are used today are a joke, if you give a kid a wooden bat they look at you funny.

  2. I miss lawn darts.
There is a whole generation that has pretty much grown up not appreciating and RESPECTING the balance between fun and horrible danger lawn darts presented.

  3. That's the reason why aluminum bats are not allowed in many leagues, they can be dangerous. Give a MLB player an aluminum bat combined with a 100MPH fastball, and there is good potential for saftey issues. For the most part however, aluminum bats are fine because they are being used by young kids that can't hit the ball all that hard. If it was a real issue in sports - they would be banned for children.

  5. Sports can only be so safe before you start to ruin the sport. If you play sports, you have to accept the fact that you could get hurt.

  6. I love sports and I really do think that sometime technology can ruin the pure nature of various sports. It ruins the stats and record keeping by making an unlevel playing field.
