Even the original slingshot has benefited from some technological upgrades along the way. For hundreds of years a crude carved wooden handle and two lengths of animal tendens with a patch of animal hide served admirably as the weapon or sporting tool of choice. Maybe you can't make a better mouse trap but you sure can make a better slingshot. Todays version of the slingsot features light weight tempered steel construction, arm supports, "hyper velocity" replacable rubber tubes and sites for improved accuracy. Grab yourself a bag of 1/4" diameter steel "yokes" and you can pick off a can or put out an eye from one hundred yards away.

It's ironic that you posted this article about the slingshot because in my paper I used the caveman and the invention of the spear as an example of the improvements that have been made through the years. Weapons such as the bow and arrow, crossbow and spearguns which have made hunters more efficient.
ReplyDeleteI love slingshots. Haha they always remind me of Bart Simpson. I always used to make slingshots when i was little.
ReplyDeleteYou’ll shoot your eye out, kid!
ReplyDeleteI was never allowed to play with or make sling shoots because I feared the wraith of my parents. When you look at the science behind a weapon you can really see how they have been upgraded throughout the years. It’s a shame that we have killing (someone or something) down to such a science. But there you have it, evolution.
Not suprising, that even primitive weapons are made much more safisticated. As I mentioned in other comments, it seems that technology always finds a way to improve not only beneficial products but destructive devices as well. Although, that is a pretty cool looking sling shot. I wonder what the laws are surrounding owning one of those. It sounds like they could do some pretty serious damage.
ReplyDeleteSling shots are any kids favorite. Growing up I was not allowed to have one but plenty of my friends had them. Look where they have taken the sling shot, when you go to a flyer's or any sports game they have forms of sling shots that they need three people just to use it. Two people to hold the slingshot and one person to pull back and shoot the shirt into the crowd, got to love the advancements we made.
ReplyDeletethat newest invention means someone has to much time on their hands. Today i would still buy a slingshot the normal way. When i was a kid we use to have slingshot wars and no one ever lost an eye, probably because our aim was bad. This new invention it seems i could pick your eye out from across the courtyard. Maybe we can add a laser scope for precision targeting?
ReplyDeleteI actually own one of these newer-style slingshots. I don't know why I have it, but i've had it for years. I guess it all depends on what exactly you're shooting from them, but they can cause some serious damage...

ReplyDeleteThe slingshot is the perfect example of materials changing technology. The slingshot was updated by new materials and the same design. The new materials make the slingshot dangerous again.
ReplyDeleteDo slingshots really work? They look useless to me, but the new one has a cool design to it, at least. Reminds me of something of a sci-fi movie.
ReplyDeleteSlingshots were used for hunting and as a sport. They were once a popular toy for children. But it can be used as a weapon. Slingshots used by children should be under strict and full time supervision. This is not a toy anymore. My children did not know what a slingshot was until they were old enough to understand the danger they pose in our society. And I was surely not the one to introduce them to the slingshot; it was my uncle in Puerto Rico. They use the slingshot to flip empty cans in the mountains. They play the flip the can game for hours.
ReplyDeleteAS soon a a kid gets t heir hand on a rubber band.. they make a slingshot, although usually uneffective. The sling shot is used for many things.. devid used it to kill goliath... i used it to launch watch balloons
ReplyDeleteYou can look at almost any weapon, toy, invention over the history of human evolution and you will find very similar results. What once was a crude tool is not a finely tuned machine. That right there is also the description of our couse - Evolution of Technology!
ReplyDeleteThe sling shot has been around for who knows how long. Something so primitive to have survived and not changed at all really is quite amazing.
